Uganda today received the first batch of the intended 2000 Afghan refugees into the country
These however were termed as evacuees and not refugees .
“The Government of the Republic of Uganda this morning received fifty one (51) evacuees from Afghanistan who arrived aboard a privately chartered flight at the Entebbe International Airport.” Part of the statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs read.
These were then taken to Imperial Resort Beach Hotel where they will be residing.
This however left Ugandans on social media wondering what type of refugees these are who are accorded such special treatment.
They also wondered why refugees from neighboring countries such as DRC and South Sudan are not given such preferential treatment.
These were however reminded that it’s the US funding the Afghan refugees and not the Ugandan government so the funds are fully available to execute this.
