Ugandan men have since gone into silence upon the arrival of the first batch of Afghanistan refugees to Uganda which has left many wondering what happened to the earlier excitement upon hearing the news of their anticipated arrival last week.
Over the course of last week, Ugandan men made several welcoming remarks to Afghan refugees especially their girls as they were scheduled to come to Uganda for a temporary stay before proceeding to the US. This prompted a government minster to appreciate their hospitality.
“I have seen our Ugandan men praying for safe landing of Afghanistan refugees, and sharing various photos of ladies,” Gender minister Betty Amongi tweeted last week.
Meanwhile, the first batch consisting of 51 Afghanistan refugees stepped down on Entebbe International airport on Wednesday morning.
“The evacuates who included men, women and children underwent necessary security screening as well as a mandatory Covid-19 testing and required quarantine procedures” the foreign ministry said.
They were on board a chartered plane which was also supposed to evacuate Ugandan citizens which are stuck in Afghanistan. However the Ugandan Nationals were unable to access Kabul Airport.
Following the Taliban take over of Afghanistan, many of the country’s nationals have been seeking for refugee status as they fear the Taliban rule which is characterized with strict observance of their own understanding of the Sharia law.
