Msgr. Georg Ratzinger the elder brother of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI (93) has today 8th July 2020 been laid to rest in Regensburg-Germany. In a funeral rite mass at Regensburg Cathedral led by the Bishop Rudolf Volderholzer of Regensburg Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI was connected via streaming and he virtually followed the funeral of his elder brother.
During the mass, the main celebrant recalled the surprise visit of 18th -22nd June when Pope Emeritus visited his dying brother on his sickbed. In his own words, he added “This sign of Humanity touched many people. So all the more do we share in your mourning.” Bishop Rudolf Volderholzer further praised the late Ratzinger’s musical contribution as it made it clear how music was not an external ingredient in a Christian church service but Music itself being a medium of evangelization.
Due to the existence of the deadly Coronavirus, Pope Benedict the Emeritus of Rome didn’t participate physically in mass but represent at the alter by his private secretary, Archibishop Georg Ganswein, the Papal ambassador to Germany, Archbishop Nikola Eterovic, Cardinal Gerhard Muller the retired Bishop of Regensburg and Munich Cardinal Reinhard Marx. The other participants were the 16 former members of the Domspatzen Regensburg Cathedral world-famous choir also known as the Boys’ choir founded by the late Msgr. Ratzibger in 1964.

Msgr. Georg Ratzinger the elder brother of Joseph Ratzinger (Pope Benedict XVI) Pope emeritus was announced dead on Wednesday morning 1st-July-2020 just a day after making 69 years in the priesthood. The man of God had been hospitalized in Regensburg in Bavaria where he lived with his brother Pope Benedict XVI for a long time.
It should be remembered that Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI had on the 18th-June-2020 traveled for the first time since 2013 when he retired as Pope to Germany and later paid a courtesy visit to his late brother Msgr. Georg Ratzinger in Regensburg, Bavaria, and returned to the Vatican on Monday 22nd-June 2020.
BRIEF BIOGRAPHY OF MSGR. GEORG RATZINGER
- Born in Pleiskiirchen, Bavaria on 15th/January/1924
- 1935, he joined the minor seminary in Traustein.
- 1947 together with his brother Pope Emeritus, they joined Herzogliches Georgianum major Seminary
- 29th-June-1951, they were both ordained priests.
