Gov’t partners with private sector for marble project in Kaabong district

Uganda Development Corporation in partnership with the private sector will in the next six months start adding value to the existing huge limestone and marble deposits discovered in Loyoro – Kaabong district in Karamoja sub-region.

The plan is to set up an integrated lime, cement and marble plants in Moroto district.

This comes after the geological confirmation that Kaabong district has substantial marble deposits.

Government has also promised the private sector a mining lease.

“We are encouraging these people to assemble the money and we shall give them a mining lease as government so that they can set up the processing industry in Moroto,” Peter Lokeris State Minister for Minerals said.

Patrick Birungi the CEO OF Uganda Development Corporation said that the private sector will be allocated shares in the project.

“The second activity is in Moroto where we secured land from the district local government amounting to a total of 221 acres and in return they will take shares which was valued by the chief government valuer and the amount of shares will be determined at an appropriate time but the value of the land is already established,” he said.

However there is still an issue of compensation of the locals who are to be taken off this land.

The government and private sector conjured that these will be paid so that the project goes ahead.
