Netherlands star Memphis Depay has spoken of his delight at signing for Barcelona and how it is a big step for him.
Depay had a brief and disappointing spell at Manchester United after joining from PSV Eindhoven aged 21 years old.
However, since joining Lyon in 2017, he has re-established himself as a top player and now has his reward.
Depay on his Barcelona move
“In my career, there’s always been ups and downs, good moments and bad ones,” Memphis told Dutch media after the game against North Macedonia.
“All that makes you learn. That’s why I think joining Barcelona is a big step forward in my career.”
The Catalan club’s signing of Memphis looks to be quite the bargain.
But many are puzzled over the length of his contract.
The Dutchman has signed for just two years, rather than the customary four or five.
“It’s simply what I’ve agreed with the club,” was all Memphis had to say on the matter.
Memphis, as he likes to be known, will be looking forward to pulling on the Blaugrana shirt.
But he has plenty to keep him occupied until then with the Netherlands at Euro 2020, along with new clubmate Frenkie de Jong.
Frank de Boer’s Dutch side have made a good start to the tournament.
They won all three of their group games, catching the attention of many observers.
For Memphis, it all starts with hard work.
“We wanted to win playing well,” said Memphis after the North Macedonia game.
